It’s been a little over a week since That Self-Same Metal burst out into the world and it still blows my mind. I haven’t gotten to see it on a store shelf yet (if you do, snap a pic and tag me on the socials!) but I’ve seen readers holding finished copies in their hands. I’d always hoped for something like that but having it be a reality is so much more than I expected. The dream is still to spot someone reading it on the train and I will definitely be on the lookout.
Also, many thanks to my team who scheduled eleven events, six guest posts, and three interviews for me. I’m exhausted but feeling the love from Texas to Massachusetts to NOLA to LA. You can rewatch my Launch Event with Tracy Deonn & Loyalty Books, my Fantastic YA Reads panel with Books of Wonder, or my IG Live Shakespeare Lightning Round with the Folger Shakespeare Library. There’s move events coming up, too, hopefully I’ll see some of y’all around. Plus, I’m just dying to talk about the book with readers, so run me those questions!
In The Press:
“Williams’s story hones its magical edges on the rough stuff of real history, and the results are glorious (and very stabby!): African and British mythologies blended with the irreverent theatrical nerdiness of “Upstart Crow,” starring a heroine you instantly root for and admire. Caught between duty and passion, and between power and debt, Joan is the best kind of counterweight to the forces that seek to move her. This first book is only the starting thrust in the saga, and I eagerly await the parry and the riposte.” - The New York Times
“What more alluring fantasy is there for a theatre kid (or former one) than imagining oneself among the ranks of the almost mythical King's Men? That Self-Same Metal takes what one expects from the setting (endearing theatre people, Elizabethan London hijinks, gender-bending) and layers in a unique perspective by centering a queer Black heroine whose beliefs meld seamlessly with both the fairy lore and the historical realities that Shakespeare immortalized in his plays.” - NPR
