And here’s an extra tidbit for you exclusively, my dear subscribers. This was not my original opening chapter. It actually didn’t come into existence until my 4th draft. That old Chapter 1 from when I finished the book back in 2019 has since become Chapter 5 (and honestly it flows so much better). First chapters have to do so much work: introduce the characters, the world, and the conflict; entice readers; and set the story’s stakes. That means that sometimes it ends up being the last and most difficult thing you write. But when you get it locked in, I swear it feels like magic!
